Performance & Caching
How compiled pages and the page cache work, when the cache clears itself, and what to do when a change doesn't show.
IGC CMS serves pages fast by building them ahead of time and caching the result. Most of the time this is invisible. This page explains what happens, and what to do when a change doesn't show up.
Compiled pages
When you save a page, IGC CMS compiles it into a ready-to-serve version. Visitors get that version directly, with no page data to fetch on load.
The page cache
On top of that, the server keeps a cached copy of each rendered page and serves it until something changes. Each page's Caching setting (in Edit settings) controls this:
| Setting | Behavior |
|---|---|
| Auto | cache, unless the page shows live data from a Data Source block |
| Always cache | always cache |
| Never cache | render fresh on every request |
Auto is right for almost every page.
When the cache is cleared for you
- Saving a page clears that page's cached copy.
- Applying a theme in the Theme Library clears every page's cached copy, since every page links the theme.
When to clear it yourself
A cached page doesn't know when other content it shows has changed. Clear it yourself when:
- the page lists posts and you've added or edited a post;
- the page shows data from somewhere else that changed;
- content was changed outside the admin — a database edit, a restored backup, or an import script.
To clear it, go to Admin → Pages and click Purge cache on that page's row. The next visitor gets a fresh copy.
Pages that never cache
A page that shows live data — for example a list wired to a Data Source
block, or a detail page such as /products/[id] — is rendered fresh for each
visitor. Set Never cache yourself for any other page that must always be
up to date, such as one showing the current time or stock levels.
Still seeing an old version?
- Purge cache on the page, as above.
- Hard refresh your browser (⇧⌘R on macOS, Ctrl+Shift+R on Windows) — your browser may be holding its own copy.
- Check the page's Status is Completed. A Draft is visible only while you're logged in as an admin, so it can look "missing" to others.
